I Blue One of My Turbo Hoses Off

  • #1

Paramedick mentioned the use of silicone hose as a replacement of the red and blue hoses going between the turbo and N75. Does anyone know the inside diameter of this hose? I believe 1/8 is slightly smaller than OEM. The smallest size is 3/16. Will that work?

I found this silicone hose that is cheaper than samco Hose Link. I have not measured how much I need yet. Does anyone know? 3'? 4'? At $2/ft, I do not really want to buy more than I need.

As always, thanks for your comments!

Thanks Macgyver!

I read there that you should not use the hoses with fuel and oil. Also a 5 ft minimum. Still $1/ft is a great deal

1/8th inch works just fine.

The folks in the link from Macgyver actually have the correct 3.5 mm hose in colors, though. I would have used that if I could have found it.

This old thread may be helpful, but talks about the A4 cars. IIRC, the two tubing sizes are 3.5 and 5 mm.

I'm actually the one who told MacGyver about that site. They sell the hoses on Ebay for $1 a foot. If you contact them directly, they will honor their ebay price. I ordered 3 ft of red and blue, and 10 ft of black to replace some other hoses under the hood. Works just great. I cleaned my N75 at the same time, and boost is smooth and holds very well. I haven't put any clamps on the hoses either.

Well then thanks to you Toronto Vento! I contacted them and purchased 3 ft of each for $11 including shipping to MN. They did honor the $1/ft price as suggested.

This is such a great community.

As for the question about the hose inside the ECM posted. I beleive it is a smaller inside diameter. I pulled mine off for inspection and it appeared fine. Was not brittle and ends were in good shape. I was on a hose replacement binge at the time and the other vacuum hose I was using appeared to wide for the inside diameter. I also noticed that the ECM hose is fairly thin walled and snugs up pretty close to the case. There were also some wire spring clamps holding the hose on at each end.

I used windshield washer hose both on the outside, and inside of the ecm. Didn't have much of a problem before, and haven't had a problem since.

The tubing inside the ECM is a smaller diameter than the ECM-intercooler line. I don't know the size, but I can measure it and post the dimension tonight.

The wall thickness of the factory tubing inside the ECU is thinner, but the inside diameter is still 3.5 mm. I know that 1/8th inch (3.125 mm) silicone tubing and 5/16th ww tubing fits snugly, so you should be ok with 3.5 mm.

Get 14 foot of the black. You will have a little left over, but that's good. You have a decent piece of hose for emergency replacements.

Silicone works fine with the heat of the turbo.

You are only looking to replace the CONTROLLING hoses. These actually don't really get that hot. It's just a presurized air system to control the wastegate. Temp is not a problem.

Could someone let me know which hose is the blue one? The diagram above the grill on the car only has black and red hoses on it.

I just checked my car and the blue hose is the one coming out of the N75 (located on the passenger fender side by the fuel filter) towards the front of the car. The red is the one coming out of the top and the black is the one coming straight out of the bottom

Will I need to get new hose clamps for inside the ECM since the old one's won't fit or is a "friction fit" good enough?

When I replaced mine I purchased 3 ft of blue and red hose. This was the correct length for the blue and there was enough left over, of the red, to replace the one inside the ECU. The diameter is a little larger so I used small zip ties inside the ECU. No problems. You are right that the little wire spring clamps will not fit over the new "red" hose inside the ECU. I do not know if this was really necessary but just wanted to be safe. But be very careful removing the one inside the ECU. You do not want to harm the MAP sensor it is connected to
